Located in Northwest New Mexico and Southwest Colorado, the San Juan Basin covers more than 22,000 square miles.

The northern portion of the San Juan Basin has historically been the site of conventional natural gas and coal bed methane development and more recently has seen very successful unconventional dry gas results from the Mancos Shale. In 2013, the horizontal Gallup oil play was discovered in the southern end of the basin. The Gallup Sandstone reservoir is measured at a depth of 5,500 feet, thickness of 150 feet, and porosity of 6-8%. The source rock for the Gallup Sandstone is also the Mancos Shale, which has shown the potential for even greater oil and gas development in the San Juan Basin This has created many opportunities for crude oil, natural gas, and water midstream investment into the play.

Since 2013, nearly 600 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Gallup play, which boasts a forecasted EUR of more than 650 MBOE per well. The play is still early in its development and the producer community continues to find new and creative ways to increase production while becoming more environmentally responsible.
